Mac OS X 10.7 Lion Truecrypt Howto

Just so I can save you some time: Truecrypt 7.0a doesn’t work out of the box with Lion.

To get it running follow these steps:

  1. Download & Install Truecrypt 7.0a for Mac
  2. Download & Install: http://www.tuxera.com/mac/macfuse-core-10.5-2.1.9.dmg
  3. Reboot
  4. Use Truecrypt

Is this just for full-disk or is it required for stand-alone Truecrypt volumes as well?

I have 2011 MBP 13″, OS X Lion, TrueCrypt 7.0a, MacFUSE 2.1.9, and NTFS-3G (free edition) all installed. When creating a volume with TrueCrypt, the only filesystem options are None, FAT, and Mac OS Extended. TrueCrypt runs fine, but I need NTFS for volume filesystem to store files larger than 2GB (VM, disk image, memory dump, etc). How does a poor anon like myself get TrueCrypt to utilize NTFS?

  41. holiday-sun says:

Thanks a lot for this great & short workoround!!!

  42. Alex says:

    Thanks a lot!!!! Professional HowTo!

  43. johnsailor says:

For me, I had to reboot. But with Lion, all the pain is gone. Everything just where I left it, and much MUCH faster! Yay Lion

  44. Caroline says:

Indeed, Truecrypt works again, but not with an NTFS volume !!!
One can read NTFS volumes but not write them.
Is that a correct observation? Just ilke “Anonymous” on the 27th said?

Writing in a volume that is nicely FAT or MAC OS Extended works fine.

Still it is ok to get to access the information in Truecrypt volumes

  45. Caroline says:

And…. I still have a problem using Word for Mac on any true crypt volume.
Word will not save a file to the Truecrypt container, it says: Make sure the disk you want to write to is not full, write-protected or damaged.
Well is isn’t because when I write a Pages document to the Truecrypt folder, this works flawlessly. And you can also copy the file to the container, after which he cannot open is on the Truecrypt container.
I am going to reboot to see if there is a difference.

  46. Caroline says:

    Rebooting helps.
I now can use full-Word read AND write in a new truecrypt container, still a previous container with NTFS format can only be read.

  47. Tobbe says:

    Thanks mate!

  48. Chris C. says:

Thanks for the tip! Worked without a reboot.
